Kelly’s Idiot Notes for Preaching John 6
Mostly taken from Gospel Advocate’s New Testament
Commentaries
on The Gospel of John by C. E. W. Dorris with additions by Bro Kelly
6:01
When Jesus began His public ministry Capernaum His home
on the West shores of Sea of
Galilee.
6:02
Jesus frequently went to the E. shore an uninhabited quiet
wilderness to teach the
people.
6:03
6:04
fourteenth day of Abib or Nisan.
If count feast in 5:1 as
a Passover, this 3rd Passover since baptism Jesus.
Only the little recorded
in John 5 concerns...Jesus’ early public ministry.
6:05
The country was dry, the temperature pleasant.
People accustomed to outdoor
migratory lifestyle.
Followed Jesus w/o one idea
how long they would remain.
Were detained by His teaching
and became hungry.
6:06
Said to try Phillip prepare him for what he intended to do.
6:07
200 shillings approx. $30.
6:08
6:09
They were in the wilderness … food not be easily obtained.
Barley was the food of lower
classes of people.
6:10
Jesus w/o ostentation or boasting proposed and effected the most
stupendous and impossible
things.
6:11
In the breaking of bread it was increased and multiplied.
6:12
Their hunger was satisfied / teach the sin of wastefulness /
all of nature avoids waste.
6:13
Miracle manifesting creative power.
A miracle is the power to do
something that God alone can do.
A Miracle is done to attest
the presence & power of God
In the person performing
miracle, that he acts & speaks for God.
It did not require more power
& wisdom to make this bread & fish
This & all of the miracles &
signs of Jesus simply testify that
He spoke & acted in
the authority of God.
Simply feeding 5,000 was no
miracle,
God fed them & the rest of
the world the day before &
the day following through all
time through his natural laws.
The way
God did it constituted the miracle.
6:14 Deuteronomy 18:15-22,
Acts 3:18-24, Acts 7:37, Matthew 17:1-5
6:15
Jesus to be a king to deliver
them from Roman bondage.
Faith of Jews impulsive &
momentary.
The manifestation of feeding
the 5,000 cooled down &
their faith passed away.
Psalms 2:1-12
Psalms 45:1-7
Hebrews 1:3-12
Acts 2:29-33
6:16

& withdrew to pray.

6:17
Small fishing boat at least
large enough to carry the 12 disciples.
6:18
Sea of Galilee 6 miles wide.
Quickly high waves develop by
the winds coming down
from the surrounding
mountains.
6:19
8 furlongs in a mile, they were in the center of the sea.
6:20
6:21
Matthew 14:28-33 Peter’s request to come to Jesus on the water.
6:22
They had seen the apostles leave w/o Jesus.
6:23
6:24
6:25
Curiosity how He crossed sea uppermost in their mind.
Rabbi means Teacher & Master.
Recognition of His wisdom &
superiority as a Teacher.
As applied to Jesus here, was
recognition that He
was a Teacher sent from God.
6:26
Instead of gratifying their curiosity
He reproved them for seeking
Him for food He gave them.
He tells them a truth that
lays bare their hearts.
Not interested in
miracles He performed as manifestations of God’s presence, but because
they ate of the food & were filled.
This class of people
exists right here @ Main every Sunday.
Each Lord’s day after
worship, we have fellowship meal for poor.
Only attracted by the dinner
provided.
Not specifically vicious or
bad people,
but fleshly people satisfied
to fill their belly.
6:27
The Father owned & confessed Him as His prophet to teach
world.
Will result in eternal &
imperishable blessings.
Material food they ate
perishes, body sustained by this food perishes.
The spirit lives
forever.
Jesus drawing distinction
between body & spirit.
6:28
God’s work will endure forever.
What does God require us to
do to inherit everlasting life.
6:29
The work God requires is believe in Jesus Christ
whom God has sent to
represent Him to the human race.
This is a work performed by
the inner spiritual man.
The question of salvation by
works has troubled the world.
The works of God, are those
ordained by God &
the works of man are those
thought up by man.
The works of God, are those
works God has ordained man to do,
not the works that God
Himself does.
6:30
They had just seen the loaves & fishes increased to feed 5,000.
This was demanding more
testimony while refusing
to believe the testimony
already given.
6:31
It is probable that they
expected Him to feed them
w/o labor on their part
throughout their whole life as a sign.
6:32
Jesus seizes this reference to
manna to show
manna was not the real
spiritual bread sent down from God.
It was material earthly bread
for support of the body.
The true bread God gave from
Heaven was spiritual &
will bring spiritual life.
V:49 Your fathers did eat
manna in the wilderness & are dead.
Hence, it could not be the
spiritual bread that comes from Heaven.
6:33
He follows up this thought with
the assurance that
He
is The True Bread sent from God to give life to the world.
John 14:6
I am the Way, the
Truth & the Life….
6:34
When they heard such great good would come from it they asked
for this bread that they
might not die but live a fleshly life forever.
6:35
These Jews like the woman of Samaria in John 4
To believe in Him with an
earnest living faith is to:
eat His flesh & drink His
blood.
6:36
Water to wine in Cana of Galilee
John 2:1-11
They saw the miracles He did
@ Passover John 2:23
Healed nobleman’s son
John 4:46-54
Invalid of 38 years made
whole John 5:1-9
Now He feeds 5,000 w/5 loaves
& 2 fishes John 6:1-13
Yet none of these miracles
influenced them to believe.
One can only wonder what
it would take to persuade such people.
They thought that feeding
5,000 was inferior to what Moses had done.
Is it any different today?
Man disbelieves today because
he is determined to do so.
Not because of a lack of
evidence.
The reason they could not
receive that life is, had seen Him,
Heard His teaching, & many
works, & refused to believe in Him.
So refused to do the work of
God.
6:37
There is recognition in scripture that certain class of persons
6:38
Jesus came from Heaven to lead men in God’s way.
6:39 Jesus
WILL save all who believe & follow Him.
That some start out to follow
Him, turn back, &
walk with Him no more, does
not disprove this truth.
6:40
It is God’s will that All who obey Jesus will have eternal life.
6:41
Jews did not understand, looked at it from materialistic
standpoint.
6:42
They knew His earthly origin.
6:43
This is a rebuke. They were not honest inquirers.
6:44 John 12:32
Raise him up at the last day.
None come unless taught &
drawn by Father.
Man’s will &
divine drawing:
No man comes unless he
wills to come.
Man can refuse to come &
God does not compel, but says “he that will, let
him take the water of life freely”.
God “draws” to
induce desire to come.
Gospel “is the
power of God unto salvation”
Revelation of the
crucified Savior.
Yield to love of Father
manifested in gospel.
6:45 Isaiah 54:13-14,
Jeremiah 31:31-34
God through all the ages
of the past had been trying & making ready a people to receive Christ.
Jesus more explicit
how Father draws men to Christ.
By teaching.
All taught of God.
“If
ye believed Moses, ye would believe me: for he wrote of me”.
6:46 Drawing
of God through servants, the prophets, & teachers
he sent into world.
(Jesus affirms
faith in Him is source of life.)
6:47
Came into world to give eternal life to those who believe in him.
6:48
Jesus is means & source of spiritual & eternal life
as
bread is source & support of material life.
6:49
Manna was bread given to
support them through journey to earthly Canaan, as Jesus was to
support them in journey to heavenly Canaan.
But manna not life
giving, for those who ate it died.
6:50
Those who partook of true bread of heaven should never
die.
6:51
Jesus Himself possessed life
& could impart it to others.
His life was spiritual &
eternal.
Make His will
our will.
Live according to His
will.
Eat of His flesh & drink
his blood.
His life He gave for life
of world.
6:52
Jews could not perceive
spiritual truths so murmured impossibility of truths.
6:53 Numbers 9:13
Unless they made
his life their life they would have no life.
6:54
1 Cor 15:20-26, 50-58
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Matthew 25:31-46
He who makes life of
Jesus his life hath eternal life & Jesus will raise him up to enjoyment
of eternal life at the last day.
6:55
Making of life of Jesus one’s
life indeed true spiritual life.
